Summary of ME Curriculum Changes

The Mechanical Engineering undergraduate required and elective curriculum has undergone several important revisions to prepare our students for the foreseeable future of mechanical engineering careers in the 21st century.  We have also taken into account feedback received from advisory board members, alumni, and graduating seniors, as well as changes in criteria recently released by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).

Who will be affected by the changes?

Changes will primarily affect students who are sophomores and freshmen as of the Fall 2018 semester; however, students who have already progressed beyond the sophomore year, or who are following a modified course schedule, should carefully consider how the changes will affect their plan of study.  Students following the recommended plan of study will be affected in the following manner:

Freshmen (as of Fall 2018): Curriculum changes will not affect your Spring 2019 registration.  You will follow the new required curriculum guide and elective focus area (EFA) plans in your sophomore year.

Sophomores (as of Fall 2018): You will follow the new required curriculum in Spring 2019, which has changes in the Design/Manufacturing curriculum and a transition from Thermodynamics II to Control of Mechanical Engineering Systems in the fall and spring semesters of the junior year.  EFAs should be designed according to the new EFA plans.

Juniors (as of Fall 2018): You will follow the old required curriculum.  New options are available in the redesigned EFA plans.  You may complete the old EFAs or the new EFAs (which include a new EFA: Robotics and Autonomous Systems).

Seniors (as of Fall 2018): You will follow the old required curriculum.  New options are available in the redesigned EFA plans.  You may complete the old EFAs or the new EFAs (which include a new EFA: Robotics and Autonomous Systems).
